The 1st grade students at Callison Elementary School enjoyed a Google Hangout with three different scientists. Each partner classroom was assigned one scientist. Mrs. Whitney’s class had a microbiologist, who studies and finds cures for germs in foreign countries, a neurologist, who studies the brain and why/how people sleep, another class hung out with a robotics instructor, who studied and taught students how to build robots.
Each of the classes began learning about scientists to start off our science units. We learned who a scientist is, what a scientist does, what tools scientists use, and what the different types of scientists do at their jobs.
So as a cumulation of the unit, we participated in a Google Hangout call with a scientist. The students enjoyed learning about the scientist. They even saw some of the different tools scientists use. We saw a microscope, goggles, magnifying glass, robot, and what a lab might look like. At the end of the call, students were able to ask their own questions to the scientists.
That week we had been practicing asking questions while reading, so we were able to use our understanding of questioning to come up with some questions to ask our scientists.
Overall it was a successful event. The students loved being able to see and learn about a Scientist and ask them questions. Of course seeing themselves on the camera was an added bonus.
